The Visvesa jyotirlinga or Kashi Vishwanath jyotirlinga is one of the most popular jyotirlingas where Shiva manifested as a column of light. The Hindu philosophy holds Tridev the Supreme most Gods. The Tridev or Hindu trinity comprises Lord Brahma who is known to be the creator, Lord Vishnu who is the preserver or sustainer, and Shiva or Mahesh the destroyer. Once there was an argument between Brahma and Vishnu. Brahma arrogantly proclaimed himself to be the Supreme most being. Blinded with the power to create he was lost in pride. To break his pride Shiva manifested into an endless linga that pierced through all the worlds. Brahma and Vishnu decided to find the end of this linga. Vishnu took the form of a boar went downwards while Brahma turned into a swam and flew upwards. They both couldn’t find the end of the linga..when they both returned Brahma lied that he had found the end. He also managed to get Ketaki flowers to become a partner to his crime by agreeing to his lie. Vishnu modestly confessed that he was not able to find the end of the linga. Shiva was enraged with Brahma’s lie. He manifested to into his fearful Bhairava form and cut Brahma’s fifth head for lying. He also cursed Brahma that he shall not be worshipped going forward. Vishnu was praised for his honesty and humbleness. This endless jyotirlinga is known as the Kashi Vishwanath jyotirlinga.
